The company “Gaschema,” specializing in the production of industrial, welding, food, medical, and special gases and their mixtures, has started a collaboration with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH). Following a mutual agreement for various joint training sessions and seminars, nine members of the “Gaschema” team participated in the first training session about welding gases and their mixtures, led by Dr. Irmantas Gedzevičius, Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanics and Materials Engineering at VILNIUS TECH.

The training was held in a consultation format, not the typical seminar style. Colleagues posed questions commonly asked by customers who purchase the company’s services or products. Dr. Gedzevičius approached these questions from a scientific perspective, explaining the causes of certain processes and challenges, clarifying when a situation was based on facts and when it was simply a widely spread myth.

According to Diana Sabinskienė, Marketing Manager at “Gaschema,” most of the meeting was dedicated to discussions about welding gases, their mixtures, and how the welding process, efficiency, and results depend on the product being used.

“Occasionally, our sales colleagues receive complaints from customers claiming that the argon is of poor quality because the welding seam turns black during the process. It turns out that this is not due to the quality of the argon, but rather the welding process itself. The instructor explained that the black seam can be caused by moisture or even the slightest breeze, such as that caused by opening or closing doors. When protective gases are blown away or there is moisture, the metal oxidizes, and the welding seam darkens. Moreover, considering these factors, it is essential to carry out such welding work in enclosed spaces,” emphasized D. Sabinskienė.

The VILNIUS TECH representative also discussed various scientific studies related to hydrogen or helium-containing gases, demonstrating how and when stainless steel can rust, among other topics.

“Although I do not weld myself, nor do I engage in such work as part of my job, and only encounter welding gases when preparing promotional materials, I was incredibly engaged throughout the training. Even the complex, specialized information was presented in such an interesting and simple way, supported by explanations, scientific evidence, and research,” said D. Sabinskienė.

After the training, “Gaschema” employees participated in a tour of the university, where they were most intrigued by the opportunity to see what goes on behind the laboratory doors.
